How horse racing free bets work
Almost every free bet in Britain follows the same pattern. You open an account, deposit, and place a qualifying bet — a real-money bet that meets a minimum stake and minimum odds. When it settles, win or lose, the bookmaker credits your free bets.
Types of horse racing sign up offers
- Bet and get. The standard “Bet £10 Get £40” offer: one qualifying bet unlocks a set of free bet tokens. Betfred, Betway, SBK, Ladbrokes, Coral and Virgin Bet all work this way.
- Bet Credits. bet365 releases credits once qualifying bets to the value of your deposit have settled. They behave like free bets: the stake isn’t returned.
- Money back. QuinnBet refunds half of your first day’s losses, up to £25, as a free bet. You only get something back if you lose.
- Mixed fixed-odds and spread bets. SpreadEx splits its £60 between fixed-odds free bets and spread bets, which work very differently.
The free bet terms that catch racing punters out
- Stake not returned. A winning £10 free bet at 5/1 pays £50, not £60. Your free stake is kept by the bookmaker.
- Minimum odds. Most qualifying bets need odds of Evens (2.0) or 1/2 (1.5). SBK asks for 2/1 (3.0). Some free bets carry their own minimum odds too.
- Split tokens. Ladbrokes and Coral pay £30 as six £5 free bets, not one £30 bet. Betway pays four £10 tokens.
- Product restrictions. Unibet’s welcome free bets are for Bet Builders and accumulators, and Virgin Bet ties £10 of its £30 to Bet Builders.
- Payment exclusions. Betfred and Betway require a debit card deposit; Unibet accepts debit cards or instant bank transfers only.
- Expiry. Free bets usually last seven days from when they are credited. Unused free bets disappear.
Racing-friendly welcome offers: where the qualifying bet can be on a horse
Not every betting offer lets you qualify on racing. Betfred, SpreadEx, Betway, SBK, bet365, Ladbrokes, Coral and Virgin Bet all accept a horse racing bet as the qualifying bet, provided it meets the minimum odds. Unibet doesn’t: its £20 qualifier must be on other sports. If you only bet on horses, that is the first line of the terms to check.

How to get the most from a racing free bet
Use free bets on bigger prices. Because the stake isn’t returned, a free bet on a 1/2 favourite returns only £5 profit from £10. The same free bet on a 6/1 shot returns £60. Free bets are worth most on horses at around 4/1 and upwards.
Check each-way rules. Some free bets can be placed each-way, which halves the stake on each part. Read the terms before you split one.
Bet when Best Odds Guaranteed applies. If the bookmaker offers BOG and the free bet qualifies, a free bet placed in the morning can pay out at a bigger starting price. Betfred, for one, excludes free bets from BOG, so check first. See our best BOG sites guide.
Don’t chase the headline. £30 you can use on single horses is worth more to a racing punter than £60 split across products you don’t use.
Keep to your limits. Set a deposit limit when you open the account. A free bet is a marketing offer, not a reason to bet more than you planned.

Welcome offers are one-off. The racing promotions below run week after week, and over a season they are worth more than any sign up bonus.
Extra places
In big fields, extra places turn a fourth or fifth place into an each-way return. Ladbrokes and Coral run daily Extra Place Races, with bets accepted from 3pm the day before. Betfred adds Extra Place and Super Extra Place races, paying six places instead of four on some of the biggest handicaps at Cheltenham. Virgin Bet’s Each Way Your Way lets you choose extra places yourself, and bet365’s Each-way Extra does the same. Note that Best Odds Guaranteed often doesn’t apply to these bets: Betfred excludes Super Extra Place bets from BOG.
Money back specials
Refund promotions give your stake back as a free bet when a specific thing happens. SpreadEx’s 2nd to a Rag refunds up to £25 if your horse is beaten by a 33/1 or bigger winner. Coral’s Pipped at the Post pays out on horses beaten into second in a close finish. Unibet runs Money Back Specials on selected races, and QuinnBet has added Money Back markets to its racing offer.
Lucky 15 bonuses and multiples
Betfred pays three, four or five times the odds if only one selection wins in a Lucky 15, 31 or 63, and a bonus of 10%, 20% or 25% if they all win. SpreadEx offers Lucky Double Odds on the same bets. Betway gives a £5 free bet when you place a racing acca of £20 or more.
First Past the Post
At SpreadEx, a horse that passes the post first is paid as a winner even if it is later demoted in a stewards’ inquiry.

Do UK bookmakers still offer no deposit free bets?
Rarely. None of the ten offers on this page is a no deposit free bet: each needs a deposit and a qualifying bet. Treat any “free bet with no deposit” headline with care and read the terms in full before you sign up.
What changed for betting offers in 2026
From 19 January 2026, the Gambling Commission capped wagering requirements at 10 times the bonus and banned promotions that mix gambling products — a sports free bet bundled with casino spins, for example. Bookmakers must now say clearly which product an offer is for. For racing punters the effect is simpler, clearer offers. None of the sports free bets on this page lists a wagering requirement in its terms.
