How we rank the top 50 UK racehorses

Our top 50 ranks horses by prize money won in British races over the last 12 months, the clearest single measure of who is winning the races that matter. Each horse must have won at least once in that time. We also show the best official rating (OR) — the handicapper's measure of ability — and, where they are declared, the horse's next race and the best price available.

How racehorses are rated

The British Horseracing Authority's handicappers give each horse an official rating based on the horses it beats and the distances it beats them by. One rating point equals 1lb in weight. A horse usually needs three runs, or a win, before it is rated, and ratings are reviewed every week. Other ratings, such as Timeform's and the Racing Post's, follow the same pound-for-pound idea but are compiled independently.

Finding value among the top-rated horses

The best horses are usually short prices, so the value tends to come from knowing when conditions suit. Each horse profile breaks its record down by course, going and distance. A top-rated horse running on unsuitable ground, or over a trip it hasn't won at, can be a horse to oppose — and that's where the value lies.

What does OR mean in horse racing?

OR is the official rating, set by the British Horseracing Authority's handicappers. It decides the weight a horse carries in handicaps; the higher the rating, the better the horse.

How are racehorses rated?

On the horses they beat and by how far. One rating point equals 1lb, and a horse usually needs three runs or a win before it gets a rating.

How much prize money do racehorses win?

It varies hugely. A small handicap may be worth a few thousand pounds to the winner, while Group 1 races such as the Derby and the King George are worth hundreds of thousands. Prize money goes to the owner, with shares to the trainer and jockey.
