Lucky 15 bets: how Yankees, Trixies and full-cover bets pay out

Pick the four Group 1 winners on British Champions Day — Almeraq, Minnie Hauk, Talk Of New York and Ombudsman — and a £1 Lucky 15 cost £15 and returned £351.63. Pick only two of them and the same bet returned £14.50. Pick one and it returned £6.

That spread is the point of full-cover bets. They turn a handful of selections into every possible combination of singles, doubles, trebles and accumulators, so a good day pays well and a decent day still pays something. They are also easy to misunderstand, and a 15-bet slip costs 15 times the stake. Here is how each one works.

Here is a Lucky 15 on this week’s racing, worked out from the latest results:

A £1 Lucky 15 on all four cost £15 and returned £351.63: singles £14.35, doubles £72.23, trebles £151.65 and the four-fold £113.40. A £1 Yankee (no singles) cost £11 and returned £337.28.

What is a full-cover bet?

A full-cover bet backs every combination of your selections. With four horses there are six possible doubles, four trebles and one four-horse accumulator. A Yankee covers all of those: 11 bets. A Lucky 15 adds the four singles: 15 bets.

The name tells you the number of bets, and the stake you enter is per bet. A “£1 Lucky 15” is 15 bets of £1, costing £15. Each-way doubles everything: a £1 each-way Lucky 15 costs £30.

Trixie to Goliath: every full-cover bet compared

Bet Selections Singles Doubles Trebles 4-folds 5-folds+ Total bets
Trixie 3 — 3 1 — — 4
Patent 3 3 3 1 — — 7
Yankee 4 — 6 4 1 — 11
Lucky 15 4 4 6 4 1 — 15
Canadian (Super Yankee) 5 — 10 10 5 1 26
Lucky 31 5 5 10 10 5 1 31
Heinz 6 — 15 20 15 7 57

Super Heinz 7 — 21 35 35 29 120
Goliath 8 — 28 56 70 93 247

The “Lucky” bets include singles, so one winner always returns something. The others need at least two winners.

Lucky 15 example: four Group 1 winners at Ascot

Four Group 1 winners at Ascot on Saturday 17 October 2026, at their starting prices:

  1. Almeraq — Champions Sprint, 11/10
  2. Minnie Hauk — Fillies & Mares Stakes, 5/1
  3. Talk Of New York — Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, 3/1
  4. Ombudsman — Champion Stakes, 5/4

A £1 Lucky 15 on all four:

Part Bets Returned
4 singles 4 £14.35
6 doubles 6 £72.23
4 trebles 4 £151.65
1 four-fold 1 £113.40
Total 15 £351.63

A £1 Yankee (no singles) on the same four would have cost £11 and returned £337.28. A single £1 four-fold accumulator returned £113.40 for £1 — more efficient when everything wins, but nothing at all when one horse lets you down.

Lucky 15 returns with two winners

Swap Minnie Hauk and Ombudsman for two beaten favourites — Kalpana (evens, seventh in the Fillies & Mares) and Highwayman (7/4, third in the Long Distance Cup). Now only Almeraq and Talk Of New York win:

  • Singles: £2.10 + £4.00 = £6.10
  • Double: £2.10 × £4.00 = £8.40
  • Total: £14.50 for £15 staked.

Two winners from four nearly gets your money back. A Yankee with the same two winners returns only the double: £8.40 for £11.

Lucky 15 returns with one winner

With Minnie Hauk the only winner, the Lucky 15 returns her £1 single at 5/1: £6. A Yankee returns nothing.

Lucky 15 bonuses and one-winner consolations

Lucky 15s are popular with bookmakers as well as punters, so many pay extras on top of the normal returns:

  • One winner: some bookmakers pay double or treble the odds on a lone winner.
  • All four winners: a percentage bonus on the total return, typically between 10% and 25%.

The terms differ from bookmaker to bookmaker and often apply to horse racing only. Betfred, for example, advertises Lucky 15, 31 and 63 bonuses of up to 25%. Check the terms before you place the bet, and note that some bookmakers exclude Lucky 15s from Best Odds Guaranteed — Betfred does online. Our Best Odds Guaranteed guide lists the exclusions.

Each-way Lucky 15: 30 bets and the place half

An each-way Lucky 15 is 30 bets: the 15 win bets plus 15 place bets. The place half pays at the place fraction — usually a quarter or a fifth of the odds — so four placed horses at decent prices can return a profit even if none wins. See our each-way betting guide for the place terms in each type of race.

Lucky 15 or Yankee? Choosing a full-cover bet

Lucky 15 or Yankee? A Lucky 15 costs 36% more than a Yankee for the same four horses, but it pays on one winner. If your selections are mostly outsiders, the singles matter. If they are short-priced and you expect two or more to win, a Yankee is cheaper.

Trixie or Patent? The same logic with three horses. A Patent includes the singles; a Trixie doesn’t.

Heinz, Super Heinz and Goliath? The bigger bets are fun with small stakes, but the cost climbs quickly: a 10p Goliath is £24.70, and a 10p each-way Goliath is £49.40. The maths rewards a big day and punishes a mediocre one.

Same-race combinations. You can’t combine two horses from the same race in a multiple. Use selections from different races.

Non-runners and Rule 4 in a Lucky 15

If one of your horses is a non-runner, it counts as a winner at odds of 1.00, so the stake simply carries forward: your doubles become singles, your trebles become doubles, and so on. The bet carries on with the other selections. If a horse is withdrawn late, Rule 4 deductions may reduce the winnings on the others in its race. Our Rule 4 guide explains how much.

Lucky 15 and Yankee bets: FAQs

How much does a £1 Lucky 15 cost?

£15, because it is 15 bets of £1. A £1 each-way Lucky 15 costs £30.

What is the difference between a Lucky 15 and a Yankee?

Both cover four selections. A Lucky 15 includes the four singles (15 bets); a Yankee doesn’t (11 bets), so a Yankee needs at least two winners to return anything.

How many winners do I need for a Lucky 15 to make a profit?

It depends on the prices. With four 3/1 shots, two winners return £24 from £15. With four evens shots, two winners return £8. Put your selections into the bet calculator to see.

What is a Trixie?

Four bets on three selections: three doubles and a treble. You need two winners for a return.

What is a Patent?

Seven bets on three selections: three singles, three doubles and a treble. One winner returns something.

What is a Goliath bet?

247 bets on eight selections: every double, treble and accumulator up to the eight-fold. There are no singles.

Can I place a Lucky 15 across different sports?

Usually yes, but bookmaker bonuses and consolations on Lucky 15s often apply to horse racing only.
