How we rank the top 20 UK jockeys

The Bets & Horses ranking uses every UK result of the last 12 months. Jockeys are ordered by winners ridden, with prize money as the tiebreak, and must have at least 40 rides to qualify. For each jockey we show their strike rate (winners as a share of rides), the prize money their mounts have won, and the profit or loss you'd have made with a £1 level stake on every ride at starting price — a useful measure of whether a jockey's mounts are underestimated by the market.

How the champion jockey title is won

British racing crowns separate Flat and jumps champions, and both titles go to the jockey who rides the most winners in the championship season — not the most prize money. The Flat championship runs from early May to British Champions Day at Ascot in October; Billy Loughnane won the 2026 title. The jumps championship runs from late April to the following April. Our ranking covers all UK racing over a rolling 12 months, so it mixes both codes.

Jockey strike rates and value

Raw winners favour the busiest riders. Strike rate shows who wins most often from the rides they get, and level-stakes profit shows who outperforms the market. A jockey with a lower strike rate but a positive profit figure is often getting the job done on horses the market dismissed — exactly where the value is for a punter.

What jockeys earn

In Britain, jockeys earn a riding fee for every ride plus a percentage of the prize money their mounts win. Jockeys' personal finances aren't published, so we don't estimate net worth. What we can show is prize money: the total won by the horses each jockey rode, which is a fair guide to who is most in demand.

UK jockeys: FAQs

Who is the best jockey in the UK right now?

The jockey at the top of our ranking has ridden the most UK winners in the last 12 months. The table updates daily from official results.

Who is champion jockey in 2026?

Billy Loughnane won the 2026 Flat jockeys' championship. The jumps title for 2026–27 is decided at the end of the season in April.

How is the champion jockey decided?

By the number of winners ridden in the championship season. Prize money doesn't count.

How much do jockeys earn in the UK?

Jockeys receive a fee for every ride plus a share of the prize money their mounts win. Exact personal earnings aren't published; our table shows the prize money won by each jockey's rides.

What is a good strike rate for a jockey?

Across all rides, a strike rate of 15–20% is strong; the very best riders on the best horses can exceed 20% over a season.

What does level-stakes profit mean?

It is the profit or loss from a £1 bet on every ride at starting price. A positive figure means the jockey's mounts won more often than their odds suggested.
