How we rank the top UK trainers
Trainers are ranked on UK winners in the last 12 months, with prize money as the tiebreak; each needs at least 40 runners to qualify. We show strike rate, prize money and the profit or loss from a £1 level stake on every runner at starting price.
How the trainers' championship is decided
Unlike the jockeys' title, the champion trainer is decided by total prize money, not winners. The Flat trainers' championship runs over the calendar year; the jumps title follows the jumps season, from late April to the following April. That is why a trainer with a handful of big-race winners can top the championship while a rival sends out more winners overall.
Spotting a stable in form
Stables run in cycles. A yard in form — several recent winners and placed runners — tends to stay in form for a few weeks; a quiet spell can mean horses are being prepared for later targets or are under the weather. Compare a trainer's recent strike rate with their 12-month figure: when the recent number is well above it, the yard is firing. Each trainer profile shows recent runners and results, so you can judge the stable's current form for yourself.
UK racehorse trainers: FAQs
Who is the top racehorse trainer in the UK?
The trainer at the top of our table has saddled the most UK winners in the last 12 months. The ranking updates daily.
How is the champion trainer decided?
By prize money won during the season, with separate Flat and jumps championships.
Which trainers are in form?
Look for a recent strike rate well above the trainer's 12-month average, and for placed runners as well as winners. Each trainer profile on Bets & Horses shows recent results.
What is a good strike rate for a trainer?
Over a season, 15% or more is strong for a big yard. Smaller stables with fewer runners can show higher or more volatile figures.
