Going trend · Glorious Goodwood traditionally rides good to firm in late July — but the chalk Downs drain quickly and a thunderstorm can produce soft ground within an hour.

Draw bias · On the straight 6f and 7f, high draws (stands' side) hold a noticeable edge in big-field sprints. Stewards' Cup is heavily draw-biased — historically high numbers prosper.

★ Signature events at Goodwood

  • LATE JULY TO EARLY AUGUST
    Qatar Goodwood Festival (Glorious Goodwood)
Five days of high-class summer Flat racing — Sussex Stakes (G1), Goodwood Cup (G1), Nassau Stakes (G1) and the historic Stewards' Cup sprint handicap.

★ What punters need to know about Goodwood

  • Watch the early going report on Festival days — Goodwood's chalk drains so fast that "good" at 11am can be "good to firm" by 3pm.
  • Stewards' Cup is the punters' race of the meeting — pace and draw analysis trump pure ratings.
  • Horses who have run well at Royal Ascot a month earlier often confirm form on the South Downs.
