Going trend · Welsh National traditionally rides heavy in late December — the race favours stamina and mud-larks.

Draw bias · On the Flat, in races up to a mile, low draws are favoured.

★ Signature events at Chepstow

  • DECEMBER (27)
    Coral Welsh Grand National
Wales's most famous race — a marathon 3m 6½f handicap chase traditionally run on the day after Boxing Day.
  • OCTOBER
    Welsh Champion Hurdle Day
Featured race plus early-season Pertemps Final qualifier.

★ What punters need to know about Chepstow

  • For the Welsh National, trainers with previous form here (Rebecca Curtis, Evan Williams) hold a strong edge.
  • Horse who handled heavy ground in their prep race (not on rating alone) — they're proven for the conditions.
  • Watch for horses dropping in trip from the Cheltenham Festival circuit — Chepstow can suit those who lacked stamina at the Olympics.
